Thoughts on intermarriage

I always thought the high rate of intermarriage amongst Japanese Canadians is because there are so few Japanese. There are so many more Chinese people. I don’t see intermarriage as an issue. Not anymore. Certainly when I was growing up [it was]. My cousin married a hakujin / white fellow.  I think there was a lot of gossip going on. They didn’t say anything to my dad because we were cousins. But to others they asked:  “Well, why is Yoshida-san’s neice marrying a hakujin?” And it was not positive. It was: “Oh really. Why? There’s nothing wrong with her.”
