Carolyn Nakagawa
Carolyn Nakagawa (she/her pronouns)
Fourth-generation, mixed race Anglo-Japanese Canadian
I am a yonsei, a writer, and often some kind of researcher about Japanese Canadian history. I think a lot about how best to tell these stories to different people in different contexts.
My grandmother was born in Steveston, my grandfather was born in Japan. I thought that made me a sansei until my aunt told me she considered herself a sansei. In the interest of family consistency, I switched to yonsei and later discovered this is a better fit for my demographic as a mixed-race millennial.
